Core theme: Staff at the universities (VLIR)

Time evolution of the academic staff at universities in Flanders.

Highlights

  • Staff numbers have increased significantly in the last 20 years, from 65% to 150% at the various universities.
  • There have been minor changes in the relative size of the workforce at the five universities.
  • The relative distribution among staff categories has changed little. Mainly relatively more post-docs.
  • The staff consists roughly of 1/3 pre-docs, 1/3 administrative and technical staff, 1/6 post-docs, and 1/6 professors and other academic staff.
  • In 2014, there was a notable increase in the number of researchers. This followed the academization of several higher education programs at university colleges in 2013, integrating them into universities.

Flemish higher education consists of 18 publicly funded institutions: five universities and thirteen small to medium-sized universities of applied sciences and arts. In our interactive graphs, we focus on the universities, where research is conducted and academic bachelor’s degrees, master’s degrees, advanced master’s degrees, doctorates, and postgraduate certificates are offered. All institutions provide higher education according to the principles of the European Higher Education Area. Their programs are accredited (i.e., officially recognized) by the Accreditation Organisation of the Netherlands and Flanders (NVAO).
