Goal

This website serves as a compass for anyone interested in the Flemish academic world: from doctoral students to professors, and from interested citizens to policymakers.

For those who want a concrete picture of the research landscape in Flanders, institutions such as VLIR, FWO, and FRIS are always available, see FAQ glossary. However, they primarily make the relevant data available as a list of figures, which may not be easily interpretable for everyone. Academic Compass aims to provide guidance by compiling, visualizing, and framing the data in an accessible manner using key themes and findings. By offering data-driven interactive graphs that are easily exportable, we hope to encourage you, as a visitor, to further explore the available information at your own pace. See this blog for more information about the project Academic Compass.

Don’t hesitate to share your own findings with us!

The Young Academy

The Young Academy is an interdisciplinary and interuniversity meeting place for young researchers and artists with their own perspectives on science, society, art, and policy.

Through positions, scientific events, and societal projects on current topics, the Young Academy aims to contribute to a constructive public perception of science and to the broader debate on science policy, specifically from the perspective of young academics and artists. Other recent projects (such as Expedition Moendoes, Overlap, Science meets Parliament, and Science is M+V+X) can be found here.

The Academic landscape

In Flanders, higher education consists of eighteen publicly funded institutions: in addition to the five universities (KU Leuven, UGent, UAntwerpen, VUB, and UHasselt), there are also thirteen colleges, which focus on applied sciences and arts. Additionally, Flanders has four strategic research centers (Imec, VIB, VITO, and Flanders Make) that work closely with the five universities.

This website primarily provides data related to the five universities, which serve as research institutions and offer academic degrees.

Partners

This website is an initiative of the Young Academy and was developed in collaboration with the Flemish Interuniversity Council (VLIR) and the Research Foundation – Flanders (FWO). The data was provided by VLIR and FWO, and based on this, the Young Academy created various interactive graphs, accompanied by the necessary explanations, to make the figures accessible to interested visitors.
